Sam Whistler wakes up in a motel with no memory, bandaged arms, and a gun, only to be swept up in a missing persons case set against a crumbling city of old souls locked in a gang war.
Why It’s On the List:
Christopher Sebela and Chris Visions successfully create this gritty noir that allows its core intrigue and grounded characters to stay in tact while the setting itself, “Here”, is a volatile substance of personality and liveliness. With the combination of futuristic aspects and the overlay of a ruined old world or past life, they give purgatory a new look that is far from the hellfire, but heavy on the imagination. Along with Chris Visions’ noteworthy easter eggs, Sebela delivers a memorable story that makes this a fun ride and something not to be missed in 2014.
The way Dead Letters begins is almost like a scene from Momento, and it certainly could have played out that way, but at the end of Issue #1, we have the little twist that gives the comic it’s defining edge. This isn’t just some noir crime mystery, it’s a noir crime mystery in purgatory.
