Out Tomorrow! DARK HORSE PRESENTS #33, which begins the first part of CRUEL BIOLOGY, a story by me, Brian Churilla and Dave Stewart, with editorial wizardry by Jim Gibbons.
This is the very first comic script I ever wrote back in 2002? 2003? A prospective script for an anthology (tentatively named “Revolver”) that a bunch of us nerds on the Warren Ellis Forum were trying to assemble. Some of those other nerds include current Oni editor Charlie Chu, and comics deities Sam Humphries and Kieron Gillen, Amazingly, no publishers wanted to buy this anthology by a bunch of dorks no one had ever heard of, so the idea died and the script vanished into a hard drive and I went on with other stuff.
And now it’s finally coming out. Expanded from its original 12 page script to a roly-poly 40ish pages and then trimmed into its present 32 page shape. I’m proud of it on levels that only make sense to me, because this was the very first time I sat down and tried to figure out how to take a thing I loved and make my own version of it, and it was as terrifying then as it is now, but in different ways.
This is also the first story I blindly pitched, and that it’s showing up in Dark Horse Presents, with art by dudes as talented as Brian and Dave, is way beyond whatever I thought possible back in those heady days where I lived and breathed and socialized comics.
So this is a nice sort of letter to future me from past me, a message in a bottle (or a balloon) — one I can finally reply to with a signal flare that spells out “Bro, we totally did it.”
