Recorded in the summer of ‘69, the greatest masterpiece humanity ever wrought (via Les McCann, Eddie Harris and, not for nothing, Benny Bailey’s SWISS MOVEMENT) was apparently filmed (on videotape). This is the first time I’ve seen it, much less heard the song before it got all cleaned up for an album release.
Some things to pay attention to:
1. Les McCann’s growling in the first bit, which was removed for the album. Either that or I’ve never heard it in the billion times I’ve listened to this song. But HOLY SHIT, listen to that growling. That is fucking intensity.
2. That french dude in the background who starts snapping when McCann starts singing.
3. Around 6:38, when McCann finishes his verse and Harris is about to start his solo, McCann quickly looks over and says “I got this” and takes the solo, confusing the cameraman who swings over for the sax solo that doesn’t show up.
4. Fuck the summer of love. This is an American classic I can get behind.
